[althochdeutsch] die, -/...ten, mittelhochdeutsch Rọtte, im Mittelalter Bezeichnung für verschiedene Arten von Saiteninstrumenten, so für das Psalterium in Dreiecksform und speziell für das seit dem 8. Jahrhundert belegte Harfenpsalterium, das wie eine Harfe senkrecht gehalten wurde und einen einfachen oder beidseitig des Resonanzbodens oder -kastens angebrachten Saitenbezug mit 11-30 Saiten hatte. - Mit Rotta wurde auch eine im 5.-13. Jahrhundert v. a. in Nordeuropa belegte Art der Leier benannt. Korpus und bogenförmig gerundete Jocharme bestanden aus einem Stück (ausgehöhltem) Holz, mit parallelen oder eingebuchteten Flanken (dadurch 8-förmiges Korpus). Die Rotta hatte meist sechs Saiten, die bis zum 10. Jahrhundert gezupft (bildliche Darstellungen mit König David als Spieler), später gestrichen wurden; Vorläufer verschiedener Streichleiern, z. B. des Crwth.
